Objectives
The simulator ticks each one as soon as the network meets it.
On both switches, enable ip routing.
Make Ethernet1 and Ethernet2 routed ports (no switchport) with the addresses in the plan.
Add a static route on SW1 to 192.168.2.0/24 via 10.0.12.2, and on SW2 to 192.168.1.0/24 via 10.0.12.1.
Check show ip route for the S routes.
Ping PC2 from PC1.
Before you start
no switchport turns an EOS port into a Layer 3 interface. Static routes use prefix notation: ip route 192.168.2.0/24 10.0.12.2. A route is needed in both directions, or the replies are lost.
Concept
How a router forwards a packet
A router reads the destination IP address, finds the best matching route and sends the packet out of that route’s interface. The IP header stays end to end; the Ethernet header is rebuilt on every hop.
Concept
Static routes and the routing table
A static route is an entry you type yourself: “to reach this network, send to this next hop”. Routers know only their directly connected subnets until you add routes or run a routing protocol.
