Cisco 8000 upgrade: install replace and apply

XR1 is a Cisco 8808 with two route processors, running IOS XR 7.10.1. The Cisco 8000 uses the XR7 install model: you stage a whole new software set from an ISO with install replace, apply it, then commit. Upgrade XR1 to 7.11.2 from the TFTP server at 10.0.0.100, then bring the cards’ FPD images up to the new release.

Objectives

The simulator ticks each one as soon as the network meets it.

Copy 8000-x64-7.11.2.iso from 10.0.0.100 to harddisk:.
Stage it: install replace /harddisk:/8000-x64-7.11.2.iso.
Apply it: install apply reload (a version change always needs a reload).
Commit it (install commit): show install committed summary shows 7.11.2.
Upgrade the FPDs the new release brings: show hw-module fpd shows NEED UPGD. Run upgrade hw-module location all fpd all (RLOAD REQ), then reload location all, until every FPD is CURRENT.

Before you start

show install request shows what is staged and waiting. Until you commit, the next reload goes back to the committed software, exactly like install activate on other IOS XR routers. The FPD images (BIOS, FPGAs) are upgraded separately, after the commit: upgrade hw-module location all fpd all, then reload so they run.

Concept

IOS XR software install: add, activate, commit

IOS XR keeps software in a repository of packages. install add copies packages into the repository without running them; install activate runs them (a version change reloads both route processors); install commit makes the active software the one the router boots after any reload. On the Cisco 8000 (XR7) install replace stages a whole ISO and install apply reload activates it.
