Dual route processors: a degraded NCS 5508

XR1 is an NCS 5508 with two route processors (0/RP0/CPU0 active, 0/RP1/CPU0 standby), two line cards, fabric cards, system controllers, fan trays and power modules. After maintenance the standby RP never came back, one line card is out of service, and line card 0/0/CPU0 was swapped for a spare from the depot. Find the problems with the platform show commands, bring the spare’s FPD images up to the release, and put the chassis back to full redundancy.

Objectives

The simulator ticks each one as soon as the network meets it.

Find the faults on XR1: show platform, show redundancy, show led, show logging and show hw-module fpd.
Bring the standby route processor back: hw-module location 0/RP1/CPU0 reload.
Return line card 0/1/CPU0 to service: remove its hw-module shutdown and commit.
The spare line card 0/0/CPU0 runs older FPD images (NEED UPGD): upgrade hw-module location 0/0/CPU0 fpd all, then hw-module location 0/0/CPU0 reload, until show hw-module fpd shows every FPD CURRENT.
The standby RP is ready and NSR-ready, and every node runs IOS XR (show redundancy, show platform).

Before you start

show platform lists every node with its state (IOS XR RUN, BOOTING, SHUT DOWN) and its configuration state (NSHUT or SHUT). show redundancy says whether the standby is ready: until it is, NSR cannot protect the routing sessions and software cannot be activated. A node that is SHUT in the Config state was shut down by configuration, so the fix is configuration. A spare card keeps the FPD images it was built with: show hw-module fpd flags them NEED UPGD until you upgrade them and reload the card (RLOAD REQ means programmed but not running yet).

Dual route processors and chassis health

A modular router such as the NCS 5508 or the Cisco 8808 has two route processors (RPs): one active, one standby. The standby keeps a synchronized copy of the configuration and, with NSR (non-stop routing), of the routing sessions, so it can take over without dropping neighbors. Line cards, fabric cards, fans and power modules are separate nodes with their own state.

Concept

Router platforms: chassis, cards and show commands

Each router model has its own hardware: a fixed ISR 4451-X or Cisco 2911, or a modular NCS 5508 or Cisco 8808 with route processors, line cards, fabric cards, fans and power modules. The platform show commands tell you what is installed, what software runs, and whether every part is healthy, which is the first thing to check before an upgrade or a hardware change.
