Nexus 7704 and 9504: supervisors, fabric and line cards

N7 is a Nexus 7704: two N77-SUP2E supervisors, N77-C7704-FAB-2 fabric modules, an N77-F348XP-23 48-port 10G card in slot 1 and an N77-F324FQ-25 24-port 40G card in slot 2. N9 is a Nexus 9504: two N9K-SUP-A supervisors, N9K-C9504-FM-E fabric modules, system controllers, an N9K-X97160YC-EX in slot 1 and an N9K-X9788TC-FX in slot 2. A cable joins N7 Ethernet2/1 to N9 Ethernet1/49, but the link stays down: during maintenance someone powered off a line card. Read the hardware with the show commands, bring the module back and route over the link.

Objectives

The simulator ticks each one as soon as the network meets it.

Find the fault on N7: show module lists a line card as powered-dn, and show interface brief says why Ethernet2/1 is down.
Power the module back on: no poweroff module 2.
Make both ends routed and addressed: N7 Ethernet2/1 is 10.0.79.1/30, N9 Ethernet1/49 is 10.0.79.2/30.
Ping 10.0.79.2 from N7.

Before you start

show module lists line cards, supervisors (active and ha-standby) and, on a 7700, the fabric modules in their own Xbar table. On a 9500 fabric modules and system controllers have slots in the main table. Ports are named after their line-card slot: Ethernet2/1 is port 1 of the card in slot 2, and each card’s ports have its own speed. poweroff module is configuration, so it stays in the running-config. In the Device panel, CHASSIS picks the model and MODULES adds or removes line cards.

Concept

Modular Nexus: supervisors, fabric modules and line cards

A modular Nexus is a chassis of separate cards. Supervisors run NX-OS (one active, one standby), fabric modules carry traffic between the slots, and line cards hold the ports, so a port is named after its slot: Ethernet2/1 is port 1 of the card in slot 2. A Nexus 7704 has two I/O slots with N77 F3 cards; a Nexus 9504 has four, with N9K-X9700 cards.
